The Summer 2012 issue of
The Blind Canadian is available.
The issue includes reports from the CFB convention and the rally for change, interviews with prominent blind professionals, messages from the CFB leadership, reviews of Graeme McCreath’s book The Politics of Blindness, an in-depth piece by Elizabeth Lalonde on her experiences at the Louisiana Center for the Blind, and more.

On Sunday, June 24 at 1pm Pacific, CFB will host ‘Blind People on the Move’: what to do when it’s too far to walk where you’re going, a national tele-conference on the topic of transportation methods that blind people use.
Of all the challenges we face, finding efficient affordable transportation continues to require creative problem solving strategies. Public transit, paratransit, and solutions like the Taxi Saver program are important, but many gaps remain in the official solutions. This one hour tele-conference will bring together blind people to explore innovative strategies individuals employ to keep the lack of a driver’s license from leading to the lack of opportunities to go places.

After a successful convention this month, the Canadian Federation of the Blind (CFB) elected a new executive board at its annual general meeting on May 13, 2012 in Victoria, BC.
Members elected Mary Ellen Gabias as their new president. Mary Ellen is a founding member of the organization and has worked tirelessly to spread the group’s positive message about blindness.
“I am excited about taking on this position. When provided with adequate training and given opportunity, blind people can and do compete on terms of equality with the sighted,” explained Gabias.

The Canadian Federation of the Blind held its fifth convention, ‘The Journey’, in Victoria, BC, at the Capital City Center Hotel, on May 11 – 13, 2012.
It was an amazing convention with close to 50 participants, including attendees and supporters. We were especially pleased to have such a large youth component this year. And, we were honoured to have the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) of Washington State President and NFB National Board member, Mike Freeman and his wife, Connie, in attendance.

Children’s Playing Safely Magazine;
Easter Story Book;
Christmas Carol Book;
The Children’s Circus Book;
Echo Troopers – A Kid’s Environmental Book.
Print copies will be distributed to hospitals and other centers serving children throughout Canada. We are especially pleased to announce that we, by the end of the year, will be able to offer downloadable Braille versions of the text of these children’s books. If you know of a child who would like copies of these publications, please write us at info@cfb.ca. .

We will publish two issues of “The Blind Canadian” targeted at educating members of the sighted public about blindness and issues blind Canadians face. Look for the magazine in early July at www.cfb.ca in print, Braille, or audio downloadable form, or request a physical copy.
Thanks to an agreement with Public Sector Publications Corporation, (PsPC), businesses will be offered the opportunity to advertise in the print edition and the print magazine will be distributed widely. To add sighted individuals or community organizations to our mailing list, write to us at info@cfb.ca. .
